The Servite Social Club

Who are “The Ugly Ducklings”
Where did YOU go on Sunday nights in 1965

Phil Harrison, Pete Martin, John Oliver and Mike Sutton were all members of The Servite Youth Club in the early 1960s.

At that time the club was held in one of the classrooms and that was where they met and started to play music together.  They called themselves “The Ugly Ducklings” and they had their first gig at the youth club.  They continued to play music and have fun together till round about 1965 when they went their separate ways.

Phil continued performing and, as a member of The Korgis, had a number of top five hits including, “Everybody’s Got To Learn Sometime”.  Mike continued drumming semi-professionally and now teaches drums.  John and Pete continue as semi-professional musicians, have both been through many incarnations on stage but have never lost their enthusiasm.

After his 60th birthday Pete wondered what the other three were doing at this stage of their lives and decided to try and trace their whereabouts.  He found Mike living near Southport.  He found Phil living on the island of Crete and he found John in Canberra, Australia.  Pete was staggered but delighted when everybody agreed to have a reunion after 45 years, FORTY- FIVE YEARS!

The obvious venue for a reunion was The Servite Social Club where they met and began their musical careers.

Whilst Pete lives a stones throw away and Mike a bit further, they are both so very grateful to the other two for making the much longer treks from Crete and Canberra, the other side of the world.

The Ugly Ducklings are hoping that as many people as possible who used to attend the Servite Youth Club in 1965 will join them on April 9th and help them wallow in nostalgia.

See you there!

This years Dusting the Plaque has a new name and a new venue, it is now called the Peter Cowap Music Festival and will be held at the Middleton Arena on Sunday the 2nd May.

Because of the popularity of the event and the problems of finding seats for everyone, over the last six years, we have decided to move to the Middleton Arena. There as been comments that the atmosphere will not be the same, but it is the people that make the event not the place and we have the best.

There was a hire cost for the venue but the Middleton Township Office has agreed to cover it for this year, so as usual the event is still FREE ENTRY.

Another change from the norm will be charity fund raising from the audience on the day and hopefully Middleton's business community.
