Nick Hopwood vocals

Jim Murray bass

Between 1962 & 1964, the Don Juan Five were one of the more popular groups in the Oldham area.

Starting as a predominantly instrumental group, we gained a singer, Nick Hopwood, from Royton, who joined existing members Mick Roberts, also from Royton, on lead guitar, drummer Dave Wilkinson from Coldhurst, and two ex-Counthill Grammar school pals, bassist Jim Murray and myself, on rhythm guitar.

Our usual venues included the Top Twenty club in Hollinwood, and several of the cellar clubs in the Oldham area, but we also played Browns Levenshulme, the 3 Coins, Bodega and Rochdale Carlton.

We appeared on the same bill as Sounds Incorporated at the George Lawton Hall, Mossley, and also alongside the Cymerons at Rochdale Carlton.

Sadly there has not been a meet up since splitting in 1964,  Mick died ten years later, and Jim went to live in Norfolk.

Dave Ball

Nick now lives in Cleveleys near Blackpool but still commutes to his place of business in the Royton area.
