The Sapphires got together in the early 60’s starting with Geoff Turner and Glyn Connah practicing guitar instrumentals in Geoff’s front room. Over a period of months they were joined by other friends with their guitars including Pete Sistern and Mike Wansborough. With guitarists to spare and no vocalist Pete put down the (left-handed Watkins) guitar, picked up the microphone and became ‘Pete Sands’. The line up was completed by Rod Fawkes who replied to an ad for a drummer. Joe Bailey joined later on electric piano.

Intially, equipment was Hofner guitars, RS amplifiers with speakers in wooden cabinets and Reslo mics. Repertoire included a lot of instrumentals – Shadows, Ventures and others – and songs by popular groups of the day like The Beatles and Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas along with some older rock numbers.

The group played in pubs and youth clubs and dance halls around Droylsden and the east side of the Manchester area.

In June 1964 Glyn left to take exams and the band carried on with Mike on lead guitar………..

Glyn joined the Melodybeats later in the year.
