In-Sect (Chorlton)

Line-up included

  • Allan Jones - guitar/vocals
  • Roger Livesey - bass
  • Ray Gibson - drums
  • ?? - rhythm
  • David (Sam) Bartram - vocals

The group started life as THE FREEWAYS , 4 lads from the Chorlton cum Hardy area.

We practised furiously and did a couple of gigs. The first one being November 1964 in the Chorlton British Legion. With the group names such as Beatles, Animals and Byrds
we decided to become THE IN-SECT.

The rhythm guitarist left and was replaced by a lead singer with a fantastic soul voice (forgive failing memory but cannot remember his name!). We rehearsed in my mum’s front room every Thursday night and collected quite a following of neighbours listening.

We played lots of gigs in the Manchester area, eg Cheadle Cricket Club and the Majestic Club in Deansgate where we played evenings and all nighters.

Was the rhythm guitarist Tony Lewis, I worked with him and remember him giving me a load of gummed flyers to stick to any surface The IN-SECT are coming!

Hi all. Lead guitarist wasn't Tony Lewis I'm afraid. We never really had one. Tried to get a keyboard player on a number of occasions but failed. Don't know who wrote the line-up notes above but "Sam" Bartram did have a wonderful soul voice. He was forever trying to get us to ditch out Beatles songs in favour of Motown and Soul. Partially succeeded but we never truly bought in. He was right, we were wrong. Those were the days!

Thanks for the update - will change in a minute or two. Lets hope I am right with this ... I remember seeing the In-Sect at a Chorlton Grammar School dance.  Lots of other groups playing on the night - wish I could remember the others.  In-Sect were a CGS group if I remember rightly.  Would love to know the name of another group that played on thre night  - the group Neil Boland was drummer with.  (also CGS) I remember them wearing those Matelot stripey t-shirts.
A couple of years later - would be 68, my band played at CGS and our singest was rude to Bonzo, the head.  Wish I had the courage to do the same.
