Went there to a fund raising benefit gig for Dave Morris who was too poorly to drum any longer for the Salford Jets. As I remember, the line up was as follows. The Dakotas, Herman's Hermits. Dave Berry and the Cruisers, The Troggs. Mike Sweeney's Thunderbirds, Dave Dee,Dozy ,Beaky Mick and Tich and Wayne Fontana, all doing it for free. That's how decent musicians are!!! Every band put in a superb performance, made the evening pleasurable and financially helpful for David who was a superb drummer and good company in his time on this planet. Bless him.
Went there once in 1975 had great night. One of the turns was strongman act who bigged-up his tearing a Liverpool phone-book in half. He was proper chuffed with himself before one of the punters threw him the MANCHESTER phone-book and he chucked it back—he couldn’t rip it because it was TWICE as thick!
Can’t believe only 3 comments about this fabulous club. The amount of stars performing on that stage was incredible. The golden age of live entertainment in clubs has gone.I saw the original band Smokie there one night .The lead singer was not the original but he was fantastic. I said to my brother in law I'd seen him before and then I remembered he was in Black Lace.
Post script to above..The singer from smokie ex Black Lace was called Alan Barton he unfortunately has tragically died. But recently I saw his son now performing with Spirit of Smokie a tribute band, he sings as well as his father did.
