The Sidewalkers (Altrincham)

 Line-up included

  • Dave Potter - lead singer and harmonica
  • Dave Holliday - rhythm guitar and vocals
  • Franc Renshaw - bass and vocals
  • Pat Stenson - drums
  • John Woodfield - lead guitar

Looked at The Manchester Beat a few times now and thought I would add another group to your list from back in the 60s. We were called The Sidewalkers who in 1965 won the Cheshire Beat Competition. The group at the time after a few changes from the original were made up as follows. Dave Potter, lead singer and harmonica. Dave Holliday, rhythm guitar and vocals. Franc Renshaw, bass and vocals. Pat Stenson, Drums. and myself, John Woodfield, lead guitar.

As an Altrincham based group we played mostly in Cheshire and Manchester areas and didn't need to travel far as there was plenty of bookings in the area in those days. After winning the Cheshire Beat Competition three of the group left for various reasons and were replaced very successfully by others with the addition of keyboards and saxophone and a manager called Brian Taylor who greatly expanded our travel area which meant many late nights arriving back home, all worth it though and some great memories.

I hope there are a few people around that still remember us. Many thanks.

John Woodfield

He certainly did, great drummer, great to get on with,  enjoyed life! and then left for some reason I can’t remember. He was part of a group called Phantom Combo that lost a couple of members and 3 of us from another group that had just started and were asked to join very quickly as they had a good list of work and to good to miss. That was in approx 64 and shortly afterwards we renamed the group The Sidewalkers. Would be nice to hear how he got on in life. Cheers. John Woodfield.

Hi Sorry for very late reply, definitely didn’t do Boston in 66, van wouldn’t have made it that far ! I think Birmingham West End Ballroom and a curry in the Bull Ring area was the farthest we travelled.Cheers. John Woodfield.

Hi John. It’s great to hear from you. I’ve still got the groups original booking list and not seen you since 23rd Dec 66 when we played the Stamford Hall Altrincham for Ashton Rugby Clubs xmas dance, not that long ago was it !! Had a break from groups after that until 71 when we formed a group with my wife and 2 other lads which in its main years was called “Three hits and a miss“ I’m on Facebook if you ever want a catch up. Hope your keeping well. Cheers John Woodfield.

I certainly do remember the Sidewalkers from the 60’s. They played regularly at Kensal rugby club dances at Oldfield Road, Alby. They were fab! The club moved to Stafox Avenue, Timperley and is now called Altrincham Kersal. Happy days, proper r&b! Stuart Whitaker
