Barrys (Princess Rd, Moss Side)

Barry's - on Princess Rooad, next door to the Wycliff Cinema. Double fronted window with, if i remember correctly, one window of jeans. That was in the days Wranglers and Levi's were 3 quid and I only earned 6!

Fondly remember Baines, more so in the old shop.  When I was 15 ish it was my main place for the purchase of trendy clothes - well, trendy for me.  Matelot t-shirts, reefer jackets, hipsters, cravats, corduroy trousers, Dave Clark shirts, tab collars and check flannelette shirts.  Loved the shop and remember your dad and brother as being so kind, courteous and patient. Don't forget Baines have their own page!

Sadly, fashioned changed and I was wearing beige suits a short while later, so my main fashionistas were Burtons :-)

I definitely remember your name - Vince who owned the chippy used to manage the footy team (Claremont FC) before my father took over. I did become a chef  but it was not the Toadstool but the Toast Rack and Poached Egg. I worked at the Grand, became Head Chef at the Manchester Royal and Kitchen Manager at Stepping Hill Hospital before training to be a teacher in London. I was a lecturer teaching professional cookery at Southport, Blackpool and Sheffield before coming to Brisbane with a lecturing job in Queensland Australia. Retired ten years ago and moved down the Gold Coast just near Surfers Paradise. When my father died in 1970 my brother took over the business and moved over the road into (I think) your veg shop next to the chippy - Cheers  Frank Baines               Email:

I doubt it - My Uncle (Jimmy Bird) owned the Barry's next door to the Wycliff and another on Preston Street in Hulme - His Partner "Fred Cox" owned and ran the Barry's on Stretford Road and in Chorlton - He could have bought one in Eccles - Not sure = Cheers Frank Baines
