The Cabin Club

I was resident Vocalist and Compare for over 9 years at the famouse Cabin Club, have some wonderful memories any one out there remember me or worked with me.

I was also a Double act with my partner Jerry Derosa and sang with most of the big bands of the day, I now live in The Isle Of Man and have for over 35 years I still record and do the od gig, this is a great site to help find any old friends.  Cheers

Frank Cane - 5/9/10

In the mid 60's I worked as a DJ at Mr Smiths and there I met an American girl called Sandi Pizuti who was the step daughter of "The Captain" John Howard who owned the Cabin. Sandi and I were briefly engaged and I was privileged to be given an honary membership of the club.

I well remember meeting Matt Busby and his wife along with many others. Sandi went back to America and I last saw her in I think 1991 when she came back following the sad death of her mother Mildred.

The Cabin Club I remember in Fallowfield was on a piece of land that fronted Wilmslow Road with Mosely Road running alongside it. If I remember correctly there was a large fire in the late 60's early 70's and after that it closed down. Now the site of Manchester University accommodation.
Does your Grandmother have a son named Karl/Carl?

Can anyone tell me about the cabin club in Manchester? My second cousins Sydney, Eveline and Gert Laserson frequented it and I inherited a number of photographs taken there  (Syd appears to have been the unofficial club photographer, being a professional photographer). Would be interested in knowing where it was, what kind of club it was, the sort of events that took place there. Thanks

My grandad played drums at the Cabin Club in the early sixties as part of a trio. His name was James (Jim/Jimmy) Fox.
If you have any photos that might be of interest I’d love to see them!

I remember going to the Cabin Club in the 60’s, it was quite sophisticated and had a dance floor, live music and good food if I remember rightly.  It is a memory of the early days of my romance which became a marriage that lasted until the death of my husband. I would love to see photographs, we might be on one or two of them.

See my other comment. This is a photo (one of several) that I believe is the Cabin Club - from the writing on the rear of the photo. I would guess this is mid 1960s and no later than 1969. Syd Laserson is  stood at the back left by the white column smiling directly at the camera. To his left, with the paper hat, is Jack (John) Kremner. To Jacks left, looking at him, is his wife Eveline (Laserson) Kremner.

I will sort some more out over the next few days.

Out of interest, can you confirm the location of the club - a previous poster thought it was Wilmslow Road/Mosely Road.

Thanks

It was on Wilmslow, I went there in the 60's as my maternal grandmother. Jacquie Howarth, owned it and we came from the states to stay there for awhile. Have many pictures. She married Captain John, he took her last name.

Hi Marie, very interested in what you have to share about the Cabin Club from the 1960s as it’s the period I am interested in. To explain further, I had three relatives (cousins once removed to be precise), their surname was Laserson.  Eveline (“Ev”) died back in 1969 whilst Syd and Gert died in the 2010s. Syd and Ev I think were the big Cabin Club fans, Gert not so. Syd was a professional photographer, well known in Manchester, and became the unofficial Cabin Club photographer. I inherited his photos and negatives. The Cabin Club was something I never discussed with Syd or Gert and it only came to light when I received the photos after all three siblings passed away – the photos were labelled Cabin Club. The reason I am very interested in anything about the Cabin Club is this – the entire family believed all three siblings died without having any children. Last year I discovered Eve Laserson had twins back in the mid 1940s ( yes, a GI was involved!) and both were quietly adopted and the affair kept quiet – until they contacted me last year. We are now piecing together their mother Evelines life. As you will understand anything you can tell me would be wonderful – and I am happy to share whatever photos I have.

Don’t know much about it really, we were regulars and some famous faces were there sometimes. It was a lovely time in my life, always fun and lots of dancing. I noticed a remark about Matt Busby, I also saw him there so perhaps he was a regular customer. Would love to see photos as I might feature on them which would be a lovely reminder of a fabulous time in my life.

Another relative told me that it was quite a popular spot for visiting "famous" artists to let their hair down (and perhaps the odd performance) I have photos of cousin Syd taken at the club with Diane Warwick and Louis Armstrong.  I will post more photos - but they are all group photos of cousins and friends. I did find some negatives of a group on a stage - but they are poor quality and I have no idea if its the cabin club, I will share them "just in case".

If any anecdotes about the club come to mind please do share.

I do remember that all the clients were always beautifully dressed in either evening dress or cocktail dresses. I can even remember some of the dresses I wore.

The standard of dress is certainly noticable in the photos I have.

I have attached another photo - whilst I cannot be 100% sure, I do suspect this is also the cabin club.

I had my WEDDING RECEPTION there 23 Sept. 1968.  Very unusual at that time to go daring....in a Club environment.  Wonderful day!

Hi Elaine,

I'd be very interested to know a little more about the Cabin Club if you have the time, confirmation of the location would be nice. Out of interest who was your wedding photographer? I ask since my cousin Syd Laserson that took the photos was a professional photographer including weddings, had his studio at their house on Cheetham Hill Road.  Ive a load of his wedding photo negatives here - no idea who they are of course!

The Cabin Club that was part of the Portland Hotel was on Wilmslow Road, near the crossroads of Wilmslow/Mosley/Wilbraham Roads, but not quite on the corner, almost opposite what was then called Lancaster Road but is now Landcross Road.     I know, because my father, Joseph Cliff, was manager of both hotel and club from 1955 until it closed in the early '70's.     He actually physically built the part of the club that was known as the Fontana.    Am wondering if the first comment here from Chris about his grandmother might be referring to a Mrs Mather, who was the receptionist there for a good while.    My sister spent much more time there than I did and remembers much more than I do, so if you reply, I will get her to try and answer any questions you may have.

Hi,

You have no idea how helpful you have just been!!

I had never been able to find out anything definite about the club and never heard the Portland Hotel mentioned. A previous reply did mention a location but I couldnt track it down. But it all makes sense now.

The photographs have always baffled me since they do look like a hotel type building rather than a club.

I have just searched the newspaper archives for the Portland Hotel & Cabin Club and have just found loads of information – enough to leave me in no doubt it is the correct place.

In a twist I just noticed a posting on a Manchester facebook group from last month (how I missed it I don’t know) clearly from your sister asking if anyone remembers the Hotel & Club. So I will contact her directly and see if we can exchange information.

Again, brilliant – you’ve solved a mystery that has been bugging me since I inherited the mysterious cabin club photographs 12 years ago!!

Hi Shirley, I am Andrew Lupton, Barbara Luptons brother and funnily enough saw her post on the Manchester group that Gareth mentions, I contacted her last evening and had a brief chat, I gave her Barbara's phone number and they spoke this morning, we lived virtually opposite you on landcross road....you lived on the corner of Albion road.

Well now, that certainly sparked a memory for some and thanks for all your comments. No one mentioned "Otto" in connection with the Cabin Club but I can't remember if this was a forename or surname. It certainly appeared in print near the porch as proprietor, perhaps of the hotel, or the club, or perhaps he owned the building as landlord ? Matt and Jean Busby were regulars with their son Sandy and his wife Irene and Matt's daughter Shenagh with her then husband Don Gibson.
